Consumers Now Say They’re More Likely to Share Good Than Bad Experiences

In a reversal from past research (see here and here) consumers are more likely to share good experiences than bad ones, according to a recent Temkin Group survey. In fact, just 14% of the 10,000 US consumers surveyed said they were tight-lipped following a recent very good experience with a company, compared to 35% who didn't tell anyone following a very bad experience. Small FMCG Manufacturers Enjoying Growth, Gaining Market Share

The majority (53%) of growth in FMCG sales is coming from the smallest manufacturers, which have risen to 19% share of dollar sales, up 2 points over the past 5 years, according to a recent Nielsen report. In fact, the smallest manufacturers seem to be cannibalizing sales from the largest food and beverage manufacturers, whose market share has dropped to 31% and who are contributing just 2% of sector growth. When Boomers Buy Alcohol, They Typically Have A Specific Brand in Mind

While roughly three-quarters of Boomers (76%) and Millennials (73%) plan their alcohol purchases ahead of time, some 18% of Boomers (vs. 11% of Millennials) buy impulsively and 16% of Millennials (vs. 7% of Boomers) say they're reminded while shopping in stores, according to data released by Nielsen. More than half of Baby Boomers (52%) say they have a specific brand in mind when making a shopping trip, compared to only one-quarter of Millennials. US CPG Dollar Sales Neared $800B Last Year. Which Categories and Brands Were Growth Leaders?

US CPG dollar sales reached $797 billion last year, though the 1.4% year-over-year rise was the slowest since 2011, reports IRI in a recent study [pdf]. That was due to deflationary price trends, with the average price increase dropping from 2.4% in 2015 to 0.8% last year.
