Traditional Media Still the Best Way to Reach Boomers, Advertisers Believe

TV is, by a large margin, the best way to reach Boomers (born before 1965), according to marketers and agency professionals responding to an Advertiser Perceptions survey. Presented with 10 media categories and asked to identify the best one for reaching and delivering meaningful results from this large generation, fully half (51%) of respondents chose TV, with agencies (59%) more likely to agree than marketers (41%). Mobile Coupon Usage Up, But Traditional Formats Still Preferred

More consumers say they prefer to get coupons in the mail (44%) than through any other method, according to a study from Valassis [download page], which surveyed 1,000 US adults. Preference for mail coupons is up slightly from last year (40%) and mirrors results from a previous study showing that US adults prefer print coupons over paperless discounts. Participants who preferred to get discounts on their smartphones and mobile devices showed the greatest surge, however, with 32% expressing a preference this year against 24% last year. Read more »

Retail sales over the holiday season grew by 4% to $658.3 billion last year, above the forecasted growth rate of 3.6%, reports the NRF, which also reveals that non-store holiday sales (including e-commerce) grew by 12.6%, also higher the forecasted increase in online sales of 7-10%. Read more »

Consumers Say They Trust Traditional Media Ads More Than Digital Ones

Online pop-ups continue their reign as the most disdained form of advertising, it seems. In a new study [download page], MarketingSherpa reports that just one-quarter of consumers trust pop-ups, making them the least trusted type of ad. That finding follows separate research from HubSpot indicating that pop-ups are the most widely disliked ad type. By comparison, traditional media ads seem quite trusted for purchase decisions. Not only is TV advertising an effective way of driving consumers into stores, but it's also a top factor for Millennials, according to research from Kelly Scott Madison (KSM) [pdf]. Based on a survey of more than 1,000 US adults, KSM found 30% of US adults stating that TV ads are extremely or very influential in encouraging them to shop in stores rather than online. That trailed only store circular ads (40%) and email ads/coupons (37%). Read more »
