Holiday E-commerce Spending Nears $31B

Longer-term DVR Users Time Shift More

nielsen-dvr-length-ownership-dec-2010.JPGTV viewers do more time-shifting once they have become more accustomed to using a DVR, according to a new study from The Nielsen Company. Data from "DVR State of the Media Report" indicates that in households which had acquired a DVR only within the past 12 months as of May 2010, playback added 4.3 points to primetime usage levels for persons age 18-49, making up about 13% of their total Live+7 (live viewing and seven days after live broadcast) usage. In households which had a DVR during both May 2009 and May 2010, DVR playback added almost 8.5 points of lift, or about 26% of their total Live+7 usage. Read more »

1 in 4 Americans Uses Cell Phone for Politics

pew-mobile-politics-dec-2010.JPGMore than a quarter of American adults (26%) used their cell phones to learn about or participate in the 2010 mid-term election campaign, according to findings from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. The mobile political user group is more male than female, young than old, better off financially than less well-off, and better educated than less well-educated. African-Americans are also more likely than whites or Hispanics to be in this group. Read more »

Upper Income Shoppers Drive Late Xmas Spending

gallup-xmas-spending-dec-2010.JPGA boost in Christmas week spending by upper income shoppers helped create an overall increase in self-reported US consumer spending during the last two weeks of the Christmas season, according to a new Gallup poll. Upper-income Americans' self-reported consumer spending in stores, restaurants, gas stations, and online averaged $183 per day during the week ending Dec. 26, 2010. This figure is up about 45% from $126 during the same week in 2009. Read more »
