3 in 4 Young Smartphone Owners Check Their Devices As Soon As They Wake Up

According to a new survey from IDC, sponsored by Facebook, 89% of 18-24-year-old smartphone owners reach for their device within 15 minutes of waking up, and 74% reach for it immediately after waking up. Among all smartphone owners surveyed (iOS and Android users aged 18-44), 1 in 4 could not recall a time during the day that their device was not within reach or in the same room. Read more »

Content Consumption May Rely More on Environment and Context Than Device

YuMeDecipher-Context-of-Media-Consumption-Mar2013A new study [pdf] from YuMe and Decipher examines consumer interaction with media content across laptops, tablets, and smartphones, concluding that the study participants (from the UK) are largely "device agnostic," meaning that environment and context matter more for media consumption than screen size. The study finds, for example, that regardless of device, consumption of videos takes place most often in the home, and that users are both more relaxed and explorative while at home. Read more »

Nevertheless, OTA revenues will continue to account for the vast majority (~95%) of radio revenues in 2017, when total revenues are predicted to reach $17 billion. That represents somewhat of a more muted forecast than offered by the researchers last year, when BIA/Kelsey projected total industry revenue to reach $17 billion by 2015. Read more »

Millennial Parents More Willing to Spend on Family Entertainment

Mintel-Parents-Family-Entertainment-Spending-Mar2013Millennial (18-35 in 2012) parents are twice as likely as non-Millennial parents to say they're spending more on family entertainment than they were a year ago (36% vs. 17%), finds Mintel in new research. Young fathers in particular seem willing to open their wallets: 21% say they spend more than $300 a month on family entertainment. That's almost double the proportion of fathers over 35 who report spending that amount (11%), and triple the proportion of young (18-34) mothers. Read more »

Local Biz Searchers Using Mobile or Tablet More Likely to Purchase Than PC/Laptop Users

The study highlights the growing importance of mobile devices to search, with the total number of visitors to search navigation sites conducted via mobile phones and tablets growing by 26% and 19%, respectively, between March and December 2012.
