Android Claims #1 Smartphone Platform Position

millenial-device-os-mix-jan-2011.JPGAndroid surpassed iOS as the most popular US smartphone platform for the first time in December 2010, according to the new Mobile Mix report from Millennial Media. Mobile Mix data indicates 46% of smartphones running on the Millennial network used the Android platform, while 32% used iOS. The only other smartphone platform with a substantial share was RIM (16%).

In addition, six in 10 mobile devices on the Millennial network in December 2010 were smartphones, another 30% were feature phones and 10% were connected devices.

Android Top App Platform

millennial-apps-jan-2011.JPGDuring Q4 2010, Android was the top application platform, earning 55% of total mobile application revenues for the quarter. iOS followed at 39%. Android grew its revenue share 13% quarter-over-quarter.

Gaming applications continue to be the leading application category on the Millennial network for two consecutive quarters and accounted for 26% of the application impressions in Q4 2010.

Apple Remains Leading Device Manufacturer

millenial-top-manufacturers-jan-2011.JPGApple remained the leading device manufacturer on the Millennial network, representing 21% of the Top 15 manufacturers impression share in December 2010.Samsung maintained the number two position in the Top 15 manufacturers for the third consecutive month. HTC claimed the number three position in the Top 15 manufacturers with a 9% growth month-over-month.

iOS, Android Platforms Support 4 of Top 5 Mobile Devices

millenial-top-30-mobile-devices-jan-2011.JPGLooking at the top 30 mobile devices for December 2010, four of the top five were iOS or Android devices, led by the iPhone (12.45% share). The Blackberry OS-supported Blackberry Curve came in second (6.55%), while Apple iPod Touch followed a close third with 6.47% share.

The Android-supported HTC Nexus One (4.14%) and Motorola Droid (2.84%) came in fourth and fifth, respectively. It is also worth noting that four of the top five devices were smartphones, with one connected device (iPod Touch) making the top five ranking.

Smartphones Drive Touchscreen Input Growth

millenial-device-input-carrier-mix-jan-2011.JPGTouch Screen devices grew 10% month-over-month, with approximately 57% share of impressions in the December device input mix Millennial analysis indicates this growth can be attributed to the increased penetration of smartphones with this input method.

Verizon (a leading 21% and Cricket (8%) both experienced a 2% increase month-over-month carrier impressions in December 2010. Millennial says Verizon’s impression share growth is likely a result of the popularity of Droid devices and the carrier’s ability to offer 13 of the Top 30 mobile devices.

Android Top New Smartphone App Platform

A leading 29% of smartphone application publishers say they will begin supporting the Android platform next year, according to the previously released Millennial Media November 2010 Mobile Mix report. This outdistances the second-most-popular new smartphone app platform for next year, iPad (20%), by a healthy margin. Twenty percent of smartphone app publishers also plan to begin supporting Windows Phone7 next year. No other platform has anywhere close to this level of planned new support, with RIM coming in a distant fourth (12%).
