Top 10 Viral Videos – August 2010

September 13, 2010

Celebrities were a popular feature in the top 10 viral video list for August 2010 compiled by video content distributor goviral.

Celebrities, Humor, Sports Make Appearances
Three of the top 10 videos prominently included a celebrity participant. The number one video from HBC product provider Gillette features tennis star Roger Federer performing a possibly-staged tennis stunt. The number two video from California non-profit Heal the Bay is narrated by film actor Jeremy Irons, who provides a mock “life story” of a plastic bag as it pollutes the environment.

In addition, the number 10 video from chewing gum manufacturer Orbit features TV/film star Jason Bateman performing a humorous dance routine. As in July 2010, humor was also a primary feature of August’s top 10 videos. Only the number seven video, a heartwarming video from search engine Google about becoming a new parent, did not feature significant humor.

Sports once again were a central theme of several videos. In addition to the Federer clip, videos from Puma and VEnergy featured athletic activity, although of a more offbeat sort. Sports have been a dominant viral video theme throughout 2010, with a minimum of two to three sports-themed videos making the goviral list every month so far.

Best Viral Videos Ever Have Similar Features
A list of the most-viewed viral videos of all time recently compiled by AdvertisingAge also prominently featured humor and sports. Eight of the 10 videos were deliberately humorous, while six featured some sort of athletic angle. Interestingly, only one of the top 10 most-viewed videos, a 2004 clip from Pepsi featuring global pop stars Beyonce Knowles, Britney Spears, Pink and Enrique Iglesias, involved major celebrities.

About the Data: The AdvertisingAge list is based on total unique views, while the goviral list is based on goviral’s assessment of videos’ innovation and potential industry/social impact, as well as popularity.
