May Coupons Save $1,178 on Peanut Butter Alone

The most popular online coupon in May 2009 offered 40 cents off Skippy Peanut Butter and saved cost-conscious US consumers a total of $1,178, according to a new report from coupon aggregator RetailMeNot.com, which said coupons for all products were valued at nearly $1 million.

The monthly report (pdf) provides trend and demographic information about shoppers who visited RetailMeNot.com Printable site and downloaded coupons. The site reported that the “Save 40 cents on any one Skippy Peanut Butter Product” was downloaded nearly 3,000 times.

In total, consumers downloaded 198,098 coupons from RetailMeNot.com Printable in May and saved $990,490 as a result, the analysis found.

Additional findings from the May report:

  • Georgia was the most coupon-conscious state, with more coupon downloads per capita than any other. This number is based on the number of coupons downloaded divided by population:

  • New York City’s 10199 was the most-searched zip code for the month:

  • The top budget shopping day in May was Friday, May 29, on which 4.5% of the month’s coupons were downloaded from the site.
  • Food and Apparel were the categories most often searched in May:

  • Stanley Steemer and Arby’s were the most-oft searched brands:

“More than nine million people visit RetailMeNot.com every month,” said Guy King, co-founder, RetailMeNot.com. “By releasing this data we hope to give retailers and manufacturers additional insight into their customers, so they can align their coupon strategies with consumers’needs.”

comScore recently reported that coupon sites were among the top properties in May, and research from Inmar showed that coupon use has hit highs last seen in the 1990s.

About the data: RetailMeNot Printable aggregates more than 90,000 local and national coupons from Valpak.com, redplum.com, moneymailer.com, Retaurant.com and Clipper Magazine and makes them searchable by category, brand and location. Coupon and shopping trends in the report are based on a compilation of visitor data from RetailMeNot.com Printable for May. The approximate savings are calculated based on an average of $5 savings per coupon downloaded.
