Google Leads Search Share with 58%, Yahoo Gains a Tad

Among core search engines, Google Sites remained the top search property in December 2007 with 5.6 billion core* searches conducted in the US - a 58.4% share of the search market, according to the monthly comScore qSearch analysis of the search marketplace.

In December, Google Sites’ share of core searches stood at 58.4%. Yahoo Sites ranked second with 22.9%, followed by Microsoft Sites (9.8%), Time Warner Network (4.6%), and Ask Network (4.3%). Yahoo Sites experienced the most significant market share increase, gaining 0.5 share points versus the previous month.

Americans conducted 9.6 billion searches at the core search engines - a 3.9% decline versus November. With many Americans traveling and spending time away from home during the holidays, search activity typically experiences a seasonal decline during December.

Some 5.6 billion core searches were conducted on Google Sites during the month, while Yahoo Sites accounted for 2.2 billion.
 
Expanded Search Rankings

Among the Top 50 properties worldwide where search activity is observed, Google Sites led with 7.2 billion searches in December. Yahoo Sites ranked second with 2.4 billion searches, followed by Microsoft Sites (963 million), and Time Warner Network (784 million).

eBay (up 3.9%) and Amazon Sites (up 20.8%) were among the few sites with gains in searches, as holiday shoppers contributed to increased search activity. Craigslist.org searches (up 6.3%) also increased.
 
* Based on the five major search engines including partner searches and cross-channel searches. Searches for mapping, local directory, and user-generated video sites that are not on the core domain of the five search engines are not included in the core search numbers.
