Search vs. Find: Enterprise Search Frustrating and Disappointing

Nearly half (49%) of workers surveyed say finding enterprise-related information they need to do their job is difficult and time consuming, according to a study on “Findability” from the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM).

The survey of over 500 businesses conducted in May.

A likely prime culprit is search, AIIM said, as 69% of respondents reported that only 50% or less of their organization’s information is searchable online:

“Findability has been a common source of frustration in the enterprise for decades,” said Carl Frappaolo, VP of AIIM (which is also known as the Enterprise Content Management Association).

“Despite the advances made in search on the internet, enterprise search leaves most users frustrated,” he added.

The study suggests that the fault does not lie with technology solution providers; rather, most organizations have failed to take a strategic approach to enterprise search:

  • 49% of respondents report having “No Formal Goal” for enterprise Findability within their organizations.
  • When it comes to the “Criticality of Findability to their Organization’s Business Goals and Success”, 38% have no idea (”Don’t Know”) what the importance of Findability, compared with 10% who claim Findability is “Imperative” to their organization.

About the data: A companion research paper, the AIIM Market IQ on Findability, is planned for publication in July 2008. AIIM will issue further findings during a June 26 webinar.
