Social Networks Twitter, Tagged & Ning Post Highest Year-over-Year Growth

Twitter.com, Tagged.com and Ning, which racked up 343%, 330% and 251% year-over-year audience growth respectively,  were the fastest-growing US online social networking sites as ranked in September, according to (pdf) rankings from Nielsen Online.

MySpace.com, with 59.4 million unique visitors in September, topped the month’s list of US social networking sites and grew one percent over September 2007. It was followed by Facebook, with 39.0 million unique visitors, and a growth rate of 116%.

About the research: The social-network site rankings are custom lists compiled by the Nielsen Online PR team with the help of Nielsen media analysts. While these lists are not exhaustive, they provide directional guidance as to the significant players in each space. Nielsen Online ranks social networking sites by unique audience and rounds to the nearest thousand.

    I wonder if Linked In is getting a bump up from the economy and people polishing off their resumes, networking more and headhunters looking to place people in an oversupply market.

    It’d be even more interesting to see the results from further afield.

    MySpace is only really relevant in the US, while Facebook is huge in Canada. I’d love to see what the different social media take ups are in the “new” online countries. Asia, for example, has just really opened up their access so that is a huge market to look at.

    More study with a more substantial audience base is needed, I feel.
