Notes: Some 71.4% of adult mobile subscribers in the US (72.4% female; 70.3% male) owned a smartphone during the second quarter of the year, according to Nielsen’s tally, with that figure very much in line with comScore’s estimates for that period. Not surprisingly, Nielsen finds that smartphone penetration is highest among the 18-24 (85%) and 25-34 (86.2%) age brackets, although more than 6 in 10 mobile subscribers aged 55-64 also own a smartphone. Separately, comScore reports that smartphone penetration grew to 71.8% of the mobile subscriber population during the 3-month period ending in July.

About the Data: The Nielsen data is based on a monthly survey of 30,000+ mobile subscribers aged 13+ in the U.S. Mobile owners are asked to identify their primary mobile handset by manufacturer and model, which are weighted to be demographically representative of mobile subscribers in the U.S. Smartphone penetration reflects all models with a high-level operating system (including Apple iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry).
