US Retail E-commerce Sales Up 2.9% in Q2

US retail e-commerce sales 2Q08, adjusted for seasonal variation but not for price changes, was an estimated $34.6 billion, an increase of 2.9% (+/- 1.0%) from the first quarter, the Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced (via Retailer Daily).

Total retail sales for the second quarter were estimated at $1,034.8 billion, an increase of 0.9% (+/- 0.3%) from the first quarter of 2008.

E-commerce sales in the second quarter of 2008 accounted for 3.3% of total sales:

The second quarter 2008 e-commerce estimate increased 9.5% (+/- 1.2%) from the second quarter of 2007, while total retail sales increased 2.5% (+/- 0.5%) in the same period.

On a not-adjusted basis:

  • The estimate of US retail e-commerce sales for the second quarter of 2008 totaled $32.5 billion, an increase of 0.5% (+/- 1.0%) from the first quarter of 2008.
  • The second quarter 2008 e-commerce estimate increased 8.9% (+/- 1.2%) from the second quarter of 2007 while total retail sales increased 2.3 (+/- 0.5%) in the same period.
  • E-commerce sales in the second quarter of 2008 accounted for 3.1% of total sales.
