Yahoo posted a 5% month-over-month growth rate in US core search queries during August 2011, rising from 3.44 billion to 3.61 billion core search queries, according to comScore qSearch data. Meanwhile, AOL saw its core search queries decline 9%, from 251 million to 229 million.
Americans conducted 19.5 billion total core search queries in August (up 1% from 19.2 billion the previous month). Google ranked first with 12.5 billion searches (up 1% from 12.4 billion), followed by Yahoo, Microsoft with 2.6 billion (up 1% from 2.57 billion), Ask Network with 510 million (up 3% from 494 million), and AOL.
Google led the US total core search market in August with 64.4% market share, followed by Yahoo with 18.5% (up a leading 0.6 percentage points) and Microsoft with 13.3%. Ask Network accounted for 2.6% of explicit core searches, followed by AOL, Inc. with 1.6%. No provider saw its core search market share drop more than 0.1 percentage points month-over-month, and Microsoft’s share stayed flat.
In terms of the explicit core search market, there was also little month-over-month change. Google led with 64.8% market share (down a leading 0.3 percentage points from July), followed by Yahoo with 16.3%, Microsoft with 14.7%, Ask with 3%, and AOL with 1.3%. Yahoo had the biggest monthly gain of 0.2 percentage points.
Interestingly, the fourth- and fifth-most-popular US search providers, Ask Network and AOL, had the largest positive and negative growth in explicit core search queries compared to July. Ask gained 3%, climbing from 494 million to 510 million explicit core search queries, while AOL lost 9%, slipping from 251 million to 229 million queries.
The three most popular US search providers showed minimal month-over-month change in explicit core search query totals. Google slipped 1%, dropping from 11.15 to 11.09 billion queries, while Yahoo gained 1%, rising from 2.76 billion to 2.78 billion queries. Number three Microsoft also gained 1%, rising from 2.47 billion to 2.51 billion queries.
More than 17.1 billion explicit core searches were conducted in August, staying virtually flat with July.
In August, 66.8% of searches carried organic search results from Google (up 2% from. 67.2% in July) while 27.1% of searches were powered by Bing (up 1% from 26.8% in July).
Looking at comScore data on explicit core search queries conducted in August 2010, it becomes apparent that the top three providers have made gains at the expense of the number four and five providers. Google’s total rose 8% from 10.26 billion, while Yahoo’s total increased a more modest 2% from 2.73 billion. Microsoft experienced an impressive 44% gain from 1.74 billion queries.
Meanwhile, Ask Network’s explicit core search query total slipped 15% from 598 million, while AOL saw its total drop 37% from 366 million.
