The next-largest category for new magazines was Regional, with 24 titles launched in 2008. New entrants in this area included Michigan Avenue, Orange Appeal and Mountain Time Magazine.

The third of the top-three categories was Food, with 17 new magazines, with titles such as Food Network Magazine, Edible Grand Traverse and Culture.

“Despite the downturn in the economy, magazines serving health, regional, and food interests continued to show growth, as there continues to be interest in topics ‘close to home,’” said Trish Hagood, president of Oxbridge Communications, publisher of MediaFinder.com. “In particular, with aging baby boomers, health is popular topic. And, regional magazines continue to thrive because of the interest in all things local, with local advertising helping to support these new magazines.”
