Father’s Day Spending Expected to Total $12.5B

      Notes: The NRF finds that the average celebrant will spend about $114 on gifts for Father’s Day (Sunday, June 15) this year, equating to a total spend of $12.5 billion, down from $120 and $13.2 billion, respectively, last year. By comparison, Mother’s Day spending was expected to total about $20 billion this year, with celebrants planning to spend about $163 each. (Meanwhile, a separate survey [pdf] from BrandKeys has a more upbeat outlook, projecting total spend of nearly $14 billion, with the anticipated per-consumer spend of $145 up by 7.5% from last year.) Greeting cards (64.1%) and special outings (42.6%) will be the most popular gift choices, per the NRF, with department stores (35.8%) and online (28.4%) the most popular shopping destinations.

        About the Data: The survey was conducted for NRF by Prosper Insights & Analytics. The poll of 6,540 consumers was conducted from May 6-13, 2014. The consumer poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points. The BrandKeys data is based a poll of a national sample of 5,500 men and women 18-65 years in age.
