What Do Millennials Like To Do With Their Free Time?

Presented with a list of uses of free time and asked to select up to 5 favorite activities, a leading 58% of men said they watch TV, with about 4 in 10 saying they listen to or play music (43%), play computer games (42%), spend time with friends (41%) and spend time with family (38%). Among women, spending time with family (57%) is most popular, closely followed by watching TV (54%), with reading (47%), spending time with friends (43%), and listening to or playing music (39%) rounding out the top 5 most frequent activities. Stitcher-US-Adults-and-On-Demand-Entertainment-May2013Americans aged 18-34 are more likely than their older counterparts to prefer a range of entertainment types on-demand, according to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Stitcher. For example, among music listeners, 18-34-year-olds are twice as likely as 35-54-year-olds to prefer to listen always or mostly on demand (46% vs. 23%). And among TV viewers, 41% of those aged 18-34 prefer to watch always or mostly on demand, versus 21% of those aged 55 and older. Majority of UK Consumers Say They’d Ditch A Company Due To A Poor Customer Experience

Beyond taking their business elsewhere, 29% would tell their friends and peers about their bad experience, while 19% would post a review online and 14% would complain on social media. Much as they'd punish companies for a bad service experience, though, these consumers would reward them for a positive one. 74% of respondents said a positive customer experience would lead them to be more loyal, and 71% would recommend the company to others. Shopzilla-Online-Purchase-Sources-of-Inspiration-May2013In conjunction with a new monthly e-commerce tracking initiative, Shopzilla has released research from a survey of online shoppers conducted immediately after their purchases from the Bizrate Insights Network of more than 5,200 e-commerce retailers in the US and Canada. The data shows that buyers were most likely to have first seen their most recent online purchase while surfing around online (29%) or when looking to find something specific (25%). Beyond those top 2 points of inspiration, store emails (11%) emerged as a key source, cited by more respondents than magazines (8%), ads (6%), blogs and other web content sites (4%). Read more »

According to a Jacobs Media survey of more than 78,000 radio listeners in the US and Canada, 40% said a main reason for listening to AM/FM radio is to get in a better mood, with another 40% citing this as an important reason. Tumblr and Snapchat Emerge as Popular SocNet Choices Among Gen Z Radio Listeners

The study, which finds that radio listeners in the US and Canada are highly social overall, shows that compared to older generations, Gen Z listeners have a strong affinity for emerging social networks such as Tumblr and Snapchat, and are less drawn to Facebook. In fact, the survey finds that Baby Boomers (born between 1946-64; 73.3%) are as likely as Gen Zers (72.9%) to have a Facebook account. The results come on the heels of research from Piper Jaffray which found Twitter challenging Facebook as American teens' most important social network. Read more »

Radio’s Audience is Highly Social

JacobsMedia-US-Radio-Listeners-Social-Adoption-May201383% of radio listeners in the US have a profile on a social networking site, according to results from Jacob Media's Techsurvey 9, which surveyed more than 78,000 listeners across the US and Canada. While social networking use is (unsurprisingly) highest among radio listeners aged 18-34 (91.1% in the US and Canada combined), it's also quite high among the 55+ crowd (73.5%). By comparison, a recent Pew survey found that 67% of US internet users have a social networking profile, a figure that drops to 52% among 50-64-year-olds, and just 32% among the 65 and older set. What's more, American radio listeners seem keen to look beyond just Facebook: 29% use Twitter; 21% use Pinterest; and 20% use Google+. Read more »

Latino Population Growing Quickly in Non-Traditional Markets

Nielsen-Hispanic-DMA-Growth-2000-2013-May2013The Latino population is growing quickly, and delving into markets outside of the traditional Hispanic population centers, per new data released by Nielsen. That's not to say that the traditional areas aren't growing apace: each of the top 15 designated market areas by Hispanic population has seen at least 25% growth since 2000. But, the Hispanic population has at least doubled in 11 markets, led by Charlotte, N.C, up 168% since 2000. Nielsen suggests that these growth rates indicate that at least one of these fast-growing DMAs is poised to become the next Latino population center. Read more »
