For the three-month average period ending in August 2010, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices.
Android Grows 51%
US marketshare for Google smartphones, primarily represented by Android, grew 51% between May and August 2010, from 13% to 19.6%. Although Android remained in third place, the other top four smartphone platforms all lost marketshare.
Most notably, number one smartphone platform RIM (provider of the BlackBerry platform) lost almost 10% of its US marketshare, dropping from 41.7% to 37.6%.
Top Mobile OEMs Retain Status Quo
There was little in the way of major shakeup among the top five mobile OEMs in the US mobile phone market between May and August 2010. Top OEM Samsung slightly increased its lead on other providers, growing about 5% from 22.4% to 23.6%.
The only other OEM to gain US marketshare in that time was RIM, which increased about 3% from 8.7% to 9%. Number four Motorola had the biggest decline, dropping about 11% from 21.2% to 18.8%.
Mobile Browser Use Goes Up 8%
In August 2010, nearly 67% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 2% from the prior three-month period; while browsers were used by 34.5% of US mobile subscribers (up 8%).
Subscribers who used downloaded applications comprised 32.3% of the mobile audience, representing an increase of 7.6% from the previous period. Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased almost 1%, representing 22.5% of mobile subscribers, while listening to music rose almost 3%, representing roughly 15% of subscribers.
Android is the most popular mobile OS among US consumers who have bought a smartphone in the past six months, according to data from The Nielsen Company.
Android Doubles Recent Smartphone Marketshare
Between January and August 2010, the percentage of smartphone buyers who purchased a smartphone in the past six months purchasing an Android device sharply jumped from 14% to 32%, a 128% improvement in marketshare, according to data from The Nielsen Company.
Meanwhile, RIM Blackberry, which dominated the recently-purchased US smartphone market at the beginning of the year with 34% marketshare, lost 23.5% of that share to end up with 26% of the market in August 2010.
This placed RIM Blackberry in a statistical tie for second place in recently-purchased US smartphone marketshare with Apple iPhone, which dropped from 32% marketshare in January 2010 to 25% marketshare in August 2010, a 22% loss.
