Buying Someone A Tablet This Holiday Season? Chances Are They Want An iPad

Behind these Apple products, 22% would like the Samsung Galaxy Note, 20% the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, 13% the Microsoft Surface tablet, and 12% the Google Nexus 7. No other tablet was cited by more than 10% of the respondents.

These findings seem to contradict survey results from Techbargains.com, which found that of the 53% of respondents planning to purchase a tablet this season, 33% are looking to buy a Google Nexus 7, 30% an iPad, 24% an iPad Mini, and 24% a Kindle Fire HD. Still, that survey was conducted among visitors to the Techbargains site, and so the results may be influenced by current deals and pricing.

The survey results come amidst new¬†IDC data showing that Apple’s share of the global tablet market fell from 59.7% in Q3 2011 to 50.4% in Q3 2012.

iPad Mini Gets Top Ranking Among Lower-Priced Tablets

Those IDC figures don’t take into account the newly-launched iPad Mini, which looks like it might make some noise in the lower-priced tablet market this holiday season. When asked to choose all of the lower-priced tablets they would be most likely to purchase as a holiday gift this year, respondents to the PriceGrabber survey proved most likely to select the iPad Mini (45%). That put the iPad Mini far ahead of second-placed Kindle Fire HD (27%), as well as the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire (each at 19%).

Consumers who chose the iPad Mini as their preferred lower-priced option cited its smaller size and portability (47%) and its lower price point compared to the regular iPad (38%), while 35% are simply loyal to Apple products.

Other Findings:

  • The LeapPad2 Explorer is the preferred tablet gift for kids, cited by 23%, just ahead of the iPad Mini (22%).
  • Of all of the e-readers online consumers would like to receive as a gift this holiday season, the Amazon Kindle Fire takes the top ranking, at 39%, edging out the iPad 3 or iPad 4 (37%).

About the Data: Conducted from Oct. 24 to Nov. 1, 2012, the PriceGrabber survey includes responses from 1,475 US online shopping consumers.
