Harris-Smartphone-Owners-Experiences-With-Mobile-Transactions-Nov2013More smartphone owners this year claim to have some experience with a variety of mobile transaction types, according to results from a Harris Interactive survey. Some 46% say they have either used or seen someone firsthand use a mobile application that allows the redemption of offers at a retailer or restaurant, up from 40% in last year’s survey. Similarly, more have experience (either themselves or seeing someone firsthand) processing a payment by tapping a smartphone, rather than using cash or a payment card (23% vs. 18%). But fewer envision mobile payments replacing card or cash transactions anytime soon.

This year, just 33% of smartphone users responding to the survey believe that smartphone payments will replace payment card transactions in less than 5 years, down from 38% who felt that way last year. And, the proportion believing that mobile payments will never replace payment card transactions increased from 24% to 28%.

The same trends apply to mobile as a replacement for cash transactions. This year 29% see smartphone payments replacing cash transactions in less than 5 years, a small dip from last year’s 31%. And 34% believe they never will, up from last year’s 30%.

In the same vein, fewer this year express an interest in using their smartphone instead of cash or cards (37% vs. 44%). Security concerns and a lack of pressing reasons for making a switch appear to be holding back further adoption of mobile payments. Among those respondents not interested in using a smartphone to process payments, 62% said they didn’t want to store sensitive information on their phone, 58% don’t see any reason to switch from cash or payment cards, and 55% don’t want to transmit sensitive information on their phone.

About the Data: The Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States between September 18 and 24, 2013 among 2,577 adults (aged 18 and over). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.
