2/3 of Mobile Gamers Expected to Buy Games This Year

popcap-mobile-game-purchasing-2009-2011-mar11.gifTwo-thirds (65%) of US and UK mobile phone gamers are expected to buy at least one mobile phone game this year, according to [pdf] a new report from casual video game provider PopCap Games and Information Solutions Group (ISG). That figure rises to 71% of avid mobile phone gamers (those who have played a mobile game in the past week).

Purchase Habits Trend Upward

There is a positive trend upward with respect to the number of mobile phone gamers who have purchased or plan to purchase one or more mobile phone games. In 2009, 52% of the mobile phone gamers and 59% of the avid mobile phone gamers purchased at least one mobile phone game.

This increased 17% to 61% and 69% respectively in 2010. From 2009, mobile phone game purchase behavior is expected to rise 25% among overall gamers and 20% among avid gamers.

4 in 10 Mobile Gamers Upgrade Free Version to Paid

popcap-mobile-game-upgrade-from-free-mar11.gifForty-three percent of overall mobile phone gamers and 50% of avid mobile phone gamers upgraded a free mobile phone game trial or free mobile phone game app to a paid version in the past year. In addition, half (49%) of smartphone owners have upgraded a free mobile phone game trial or free mobile phone game app to a paid version in the past year, 44% more than the percentage of feature phone owners (34%). There was not a large difference between US and UK gamers in upgrade behavior.

More Mobile Gamers Spend at Least $6

popcap-mobile-gamers-spending-trend-2009-2011-mar11.gifThere also is a positive trend upward with respect to the number of mobile phone gamers who have spent or plan to spend at least $6 per year on games for their mobile phone. In 2009, 41% of the mobile phone gamers and 49% of the avid mobile phone gamers spent at least $6 on mobile phone games.

This increased to 19.5% to 49% and 18% to 58% respectively in 2010, and is projected to jump 27% to 52% 24% to and 61% this year.

6 in 10 Mobile Gamers Recommend Games

Six in 10 (57%) overall US and UK mobile phone gamers have recommended a mobile phone game to someone else, according to other study data. Among avid mobile phone gamers (those who have played in the last week), the figure rises to 64%.

In addition, smartphone owners (63%) are more likely than feature phone owners (48%) to recommend a mobile game, and US gamers (60%) are more likely than UK gamers (53%).

About the Data: This international research was conducted by Information Solutions Group for PopCap Games. The results are based on 2,425 online surveys completed by mobile phone owners in the US and UK between January 25 and January 31, 2011.
