GlobalWebIndex-Top-Global-Mobile-Apps-in-Q2-Aug2013Despite having a highly engaged mobile user base, Twitter falls behind Google+ in mobile application popularity around the world, according to a recent study from GlobalWebIndex. Results from the survey, which took place during Q2 in 31 countries and counted 160,000 respondents, indicate that 30% of smartphone owners claimed to have used the Google+ mobile app in the past month, compared to 22% for Twitter’s app. (The study does not appear to take into account 3rd-party platforms, and some have noted the absence of Gmail.)

The most popular application for smartphone owners around the world is Google Maps, per the research, used by 54% in the previous month. According to Mobidia research reported by FierceMobileContent, 55% of iOS users in the US with Google Maps installed are using it weekly.

Behind Google Maps in the global app popularity contest is Facebook, with its offering used by 44% of respondents. YouTube (35%) follows, with Weixin/Wechat (27%) rounding out the top 5 behind Google+.

In other notable results:

  • Instagram takes the final spot in the top 10, used by 11% of respondents;
  • 3% of smartphone owners report having used the Yelp app in the past month; and
  • 2% have used Vine.
