Facebook remains easily the leading social referrer of traffic to publishers, per recent figures released by Shareaholic. The company is out with new data that reinforces not only how dominant Facebook is in this space, but also how quickly mobile is growing as a primary component of the platform. According to the latest figures, Facebook referred 2.77% of total traffic to Shareaholic’s publisher network from mobile users alone in September. That figure is larger than the total traffic referral share from Twitter, StumbleUpon, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn and Google+, Â combined.
Only Pinterest referred more traffic (overall) than Facebook did via its mobile users.
In fact, over the past year or so, Facebook’s mobile referrals have more than tripled in share. In September 2012, Facebook referred 6.53% of total traffic to Shareaholic’s network ofÂ 200,000 publishers, with mobile referring 0.79% of traffic. Fast forward to September 2013, and Facebook’s total referral share had grown to 10.37%, with mobile soaring to 2.77% share. In other words, Facebook’s mobile referral share increased by 253% over that 13-month period. As Shareaholic points out, that means that a majority of Facebook’s referral growth was the result of mobile increases.
It’s worth noting – as with the last referral report – that the data represents a subset of publishers, however large, and may skew towards a certain type of website.
According to Facebook itself, mobile accounted for 49% of ad revenues during Q3, with mobile monthly active users (MAU) reaching almost three-quarters of total MAUs. And according to the latest figures from comScore, Facebook’s desktop-only visitor count numbered 142.2 million in September, with that figure rising to 182.1 million when factoring in mobile visitors.
