For the first time, more TV households have access to Netflix (54%) than a DVR (53%), with Netflix access almost doubling from 2011 (26%). That’s according to the latest annual study of on-demand usage by the Leichtman Research Group (LRG), which also found that 82% of US households surveyed have a DVR, get Netflix or use Video on-Demand (VOD) from a provider.

That figure represents a slight increase from 81% of households last year, and is up from 76% the year prior.

This year, 33% of households use 2 of the on-demand services (up from 30% last year) and 14% use all 3 (up slightly from 13% last year).

Nielsen had previously noted a similar milestone in streaming video, reporting that in Q1 2016 SVOD service penetration had risen to match DVR penetration in TV households (50% each) for the first time.

In other results from the LRG report:

  • 64% of households have a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service from Netflix, Amazon Prime and/or Hulu and 51% stream these services monthly, up from 57% and 48% last year, respectively;
  • 23% of all adults stream Netflix daily, compared to 6% in 2011;
  • The vast majority (81%) of Netflix streaming users view the service on a TV set; and
  • A majority ”“ 58% ”“ of cable subscribers used VOD in the past month.

About the Data: The LRG results are based on a survey of 1211 adults ages 18+ from throughout the continental US in households with a TV set. The random sample of respondents was distributed and weighted to best reflect the demographic and geographic make-up of the US. The telephone survey (including landline and cell phone calls) was conducted in January 2017. The overall sample has a statistical margin of error of +/- 2.8%.
