Big media players The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, The Financial Times and American Lawyer were judged to be among “10 Great Media Websites,” on a list that was recently released in a special report by MediaBusiness.
In addition to these household names, niche sites such as Police One, Growing Produce and Communications of the ACM also made the cut for innovation, ingenuity and effective use of web 2.0 tools.
As part of the judging, websites were compared with each other according to criteria appropriate to the given category.
The list of 10 (in alphabetical order) and the category in which they were judged:
- American Lawyer – Best trade site
- BusinessWeek – Best non-IT web 2.0 site
- Communications of the ACM – Best launch
- Converge – Best re-launch
- The Financial Times – Best paid subscription
- Growing Produce – Best portal
- Notebook Review – Best IT web 2.0 site
- PC World – Best tech site
- Police One – Best video/multimedia site
- The Wall Street Journal – Best general business site
Before being submitted to judges, each site went through an initial screening to evaluate its appearance, organization and navigation; search functionality; video and other multimedia content; and community/social media (web 2.0) features. The litmus test for web 2.0 elements was recent and regular participation by users.? Sites that were selected in last year’s “10 Great Media Web Sites” report were eliminated from consideration.
