Americans Conduct More Core Searches in March

Americans conducted 15.4 billion core searches in March 2010, a healthy 6.2% increase from 14.5 billion the previous month, according to comScore qSearch data.

Core Search Leader Market Share Changes Little
There was little change in the market share statistics of the five leading US online search providers between February and March 2010. Google Sites led the core search market with 65.1% market share, down from 65.5%. Yahoo Sites slightly rose from 16.8% to 16.9% market share. Microsoft Sites also grew slightly from 11.5% to 11.7% market share. Ask Network and AOL LLC Network’s market share rankings remained virtually unchanged in the low single digits.

Ask Network Leads Total Core Search Growth
Although its market share remains an anemic 3.8%, Ask Network showed strong 10% growth in its total number of core searches performed during March 2010, rising from 540 million the previous month to 593 million.

The other four leading US online search providers also reported strong core search growth last month. Google Sites had 10.05 billion core searches, up 6% from 9.47 billion. Yahoo Sites had 2.6 billion core searches a 7% increase from 2.43 billion. Microsoft Sites had 1.8 billion core searches, an 8% increase from 1.67 billion. AOL LLC came in a distant fifth with 380 million core searches, which still represented strong 6% growth from 358 million the previous month.

Facebook Continues Explosive Growth
In the March 2010 analysis of the top properties where search activity is observed, Google Sites led the search market with 14.3 billion search queries, followed by Yahoo Sites with 2.7 billion queries and Microsoft Sites with 1.9 billion. Facebook.com experienced significant growth during the month with a 48% increase to 647 million searches, jumping one position in the ranking.

Facebook.com is continuing to record impressive monthly search query growth. In February 2010, the online social network had a 10% query increase to 436 million searches, according to comScore.
