Top May ’10 Coupons: hotels.com, IHOP

An online coupon for $30 off a five-night booking with online travel service hotels.com and a printable coupon for a free entr?e with the purchase of two entrees and two beverages at casual dining retailer IHOP were the top coupons in May 2010, according to [pdf] coupon aggregator RetailMeNot, which recently released its coupon data report for the month.

RetailMeNot’s report on top monthly coupons separately reports its online and printable-coupon savings numbers. Overall, consumers saved about $5.98 million online last month and have saved about $42.43 million online since January 1, 2010. Printable coupon users saved about $1.27 million online last month, downloading 255,192 coupons. Since January 1, 2010 printable coupon users have saved $6.87 million, downloading 1.37 million coupons.

May 2010 coupon traffic measured 13.6 million users, a 42% increase from 9.61 million users in May 2009. During the month, online coupon users generated about $31.1 million in sales, a 42% jump from $22 million in May 2009. There were 470,767 online coupons available for 63,899 retailers, and 57,207 printable coupons available for 52,000 stores.

May 2010 Brand and Category Highlights
The three most-searched stores for online coupons in May 2010 were Victoria’s Secret, Kohl’s, and JCPenney. IHOP, Fantastic Sam’s and Great Clips were the top three printable brands searched last month. The top three printable categories searched were food, clothing and restaurant.

May 2010 Local/State Highlights
The top three printable ZIP codes searched were 60544 (Plainfield, IL), 30004 (Alpharetta, GA), and 60653 (Naperville, IL); and the top three states using printable coupons were Georgia, Illinois and New Jersey. The top three states using online coupons were New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

Online Coupons Affect Bottom Line
Online coupons can have a significant impact on retailers’ bottom line results, according to data from Compete. One-third of online shoppers surveyed in Compete’s recent “Online Shopper Intelligence” survey said they generally use coupon sites while shopping online.

In April 2010, 35 million consumers visited coupon sites, up 5% from April 2009. More than half of the consumers (57%) who used a coupon code during their last online purchase said that if they had not received the discount, they would not have bought the item(s).
