August 25, 2010

For the second straight month, MSN/Windows Live/Bing Search grew its share of the US search market by about 50% annually, according to data from The Nielsen Company.

MSN Closes in on 14% Market Share
Between July 2009 and July 2010, MSN/Windows Live/Bing’s share of the US search market has grown from 9% to 13.6% (a delta increase of 4.6% or a relative increase of 51%). This follows a 50% relative increase in its US search market share between June 2009 and June 2010.

Despite its dramatic year-over-year growth, MSN/Windows Live/Bing remained in the number three spot among major US search providers.

Number two Yahoo also repeated a pattern from June 2010, losing 17% of its year-over-year search share, although it gained 4% month-over-month to take 14.3% of the market. Consequently, during the last year Yahoo’s delta lead on MSN/Windows Live/Bing has been reduced from 7.1% to only 0.7%.

Google continued its long-term dominant position, holding 64.2% market share, a slight drop both monthly and annually. AOL Search, ranked fifth with 1.9% market share, lost 38% of its market share from July 2009.

MSN Achieves Annual Search Volume Increase
The number of searches conducted in the US during the last year has decreased by 16%, from 10.5 billion in July 2009 to 8.8 billion in July 2010. MSN/Windows Live/Bing was the only one of the top three engines to have experienced an increase in annual search volume – a 28% increase from 0.9 billion to 1.2 billion.

Meanwhile, Yahoo lost 17% of its annual search volume and Google lost 30%, although they retained their number two and one spots with 1.3 billion and 5.7 billion searches, respectively.

Google Leads in Explicit, Total Core Searches
Google Sites led both the explicit and total core search markets in July 2010, according to comScore qSearch data.

Google Sites led the US explicit core search market (which measures user engagement with a search service with the intent to retrieve search results) in July 2010 with 65.8% market share, down 0.4 percentage points from June 2010, followed by Yahoo Sites with 17.1% (up 0.4 percentage points) and Microsoft sites with 11%. Ask network captured 3.8% of explicit core searches, followed by AOL LLC with 2.3%.

Google Sites ranked first in total searches with 10.3 billion searches, followed by Yahoo Sites in second with 2.7 billion (up 3%) and Microsoft Sites in third with 1.7 billion. Ask Network accounted for 588 million explicit core searches (up 1%), followed by AOL LLC Network with 365 million (down 1%).
