comscore-top-smartphone-platform-nov-2010-jan-2011.JPGAlthough RIM Blackberry maintained a healthy lead in US smartphone share in November 2010, it continued a pattern of losing share, dropping 11% from 37.6% in August 2010 to 33.5%, according to comScore MobiLens data. RIM Blackberry also lost 9% of its US smartphone market share between July and October 2010.

Meanwhile, Google (essentially representing the Android platform), narrowly beat Apple for second place, growing almost 33% from 19.6% to 26%. Apple slipped to third place with 25% market share, dropping about 4% from 26% market share in August 2010. Google experienced a sizable growth surge for much of 2010, also increasing its market share by 38% between July and October 2010.

A total of 61.5 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in November 2010, up 10% from the preceding three-month period.

The top five OEM companies maintained their positions from October 2010, with Samsung increasing its market share about 4%, from 23.6% to 24.5%. Motorola held the third place position but lost close to 10% of its market share, declining from 18.8% to 17%.

For the three-month average period ending in November 2010, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices.

Leading Mobile Activities Grow in Popularity

comscore-mobile-content-nov-2010-jan-2011.JPGIn November 2010, 67.1% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up less than 1% from 66.6% in October 2010, while browsers were used by 35.3% of US mobile subscribers (up about 2% from 34.5%).

Subscribers who used downloaded applications comprised 33.4% of the mobile audience, representing an increase of 3% from 32.3%. Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 4%, representing 23.5% of mobile subscribers. Playing games attracted 22.6% of the mobile audience, the only mobile activity researched by comScore to lose popularity during the month (down about 4%).

Nielsen: Race for Smartphone Market Share Tightens

When it comes to overall consumer smartphone market share, Android OS (about 26%) is still behind Apple iOS (close to 29%), according to recent data from The Nielsen Company. RIM Blackberry’s position is less clear. Its share (also about 26%) puts it within the margin of error of both Apple iOS and Android. In other words, RIM remains statistically tied with both Apple for first and Android for third. Apple’s clear lead over Android notwithstanding, Nielsen says this race might still be too close to call.

However, Nielsen data indicates RIM Blackberry has lost its clear number one position in June 2010 (34%), while Android has gained more than 50% market share from 15% in the same time period.
