Verizon LTE Tops in Data Success, Average Data Speeds

RootMetrics compared 4G data speeds among Verizon LTE, T-Mobile HSPA +21, Sprint WiMAX, and AT&T HSPA+. Verizon had a 100% data success rate, and provided average download speed of more than 10 Mbps almost 90% of the time. Average upload speeds of 5-10 Mbps were achieved a full 100% of the time.

Verizon in Own Class for Average Download, Upload Speed

When it comes to average download speed, Verizon clearly outclassed any other provider RootMetrics examined. Verzion’s average data download speed was 17, 160 Kbps, roughly four times as fast as Sprint and T-Mobile, and 14.5 times faster than the average data download speed of AT&T.

In terms of average data upload speed, Verizon averaged 6,061 Kbps, which was still 37% faster than Sprint’s data download speed. This was 4.7 times as fast as runner-up Sprint and 49.3 times faster than laggard AT&T.

Sprint only reached download speed of more than 10 Mbps 13% of time, compared to 10% of the time for T-Mobile and never for AT&T. No 4G network other than Verizon achieved upload speeds of 5-10 Mbps.

Sprint Second in Data Success

However, larger differences among these two providers were detected in rates of specific download success (T-Mobile 95%, AT&T 65%) and upload success (T-Mobile 97%, AT&T 68%).

3 in 10 Consumers Plan 4G Purchase

Almost three in 10 US consumers surveyed said they were planning on buying a 4G device within the next 12 months, according to recent data from The Nielsen Company. While there’s not yet data to suggest how many of those subscribers will actually purchase a 4G device in the next year, executing a purchase contract is a simple matter.

About the Data: RootMetrics ran data speed tests during a drive of the Seattle, WA area on March 18, 2011 using unaltered off-the-shelf smartphones to measure consumer experience of service performance across 4G mobile data networks.
