Musician Channels Dominate YouTube

April 18, 2011

famecount-top-youtube-channels-apr11.gifChannels dedicated to specific musicians dominate the YouTube online video platform, according to data collected April 18, 2011 by Famecount. Seven of the top 10 most-viewed YouTube channels are dedicated to individual musical performers.

Teens Take Top Two Spots

Teenage musical performers occupy the top two spots on the Famecount list. Seventeen-year-old pop idol Justin Bieber, whose career began a few years ago with homemade videos posted on YouTube, is ranked #1 with almost 111.1 million global views in the month leading to April 18, 2011.

Following Bieber in the second spot is new pop music sensation Rebecca Black, a 13-year-old singer who recently paid to have her single “Friday” produced by Ark Music Factory and released exclusively on YouTube and iTunes. Black closely trails Bieber with almost 108.9 million global monthly views.

Gaming, Comedy Channels Break Music Stranglehold

The number three position is held by Machinima.com, a channel devoted to video games. It is interesting to note that the monthly global viewer total significantly drops from roughly 109 million for Black to a little more than 90 million for Machinima.

The only other non-musical channel to make the top 10 list is a channel devoted to comedian Jay William Johnson, ranking seventh. In addition, a channel dedicated to videos from Atlantic Records ranks 10th, but while it does not focus on one specific performer the channel is still devoted to musical content.

Young Performers Preferred

Leading YouTube channels are overwhelmingly dedicated to young performers. In addition to the teenaged Bieber and Black, musicians with channels in the top 10 include Rihanna (age 23) and Lady Gaga (age 25). The Black Eyed Peas features members in their 30s, and Eminem is 38. The only individual musical performer older than 40 is Jennifer Lopez (age 41). Even Ray William Johnson is only 23.

All Performers in Top 10 North American

All eight of the top 10 performers in the Famecount top 10 YouTube channel list are from North America, with six being US natives. Bieber is Canadian and Rihanna is from Barbados, although both now base their careers in the US.

Musicians Have Most Twitter Followers

Five of the 10 most-followed Twitter users are primarily famous for being musical performers, led by Lady Gaga and Bieber, according to an April 2011 ranking by social media analysis service Twitalyzer. All of the 10 most popular users are celebrities from the world of entertainment or politics, rather than technology personalities or online celebrities such as bloggers or social networkers.
