Online Moms Who Share Health News also Share Personal, Food News

Results of “How US Moms Share and Spread Information” indicate the only other category shared often by more than 80% of moms who often share health news is food, restaurant and recipe ideas (85%).

In addition, almost 80% of these moms often share retail sale information online.

Kids’ Health Info Top Online Topic

In the survey, when asked to which topics moms would pay attention in an online community, the most popular topic was
children’s health information (91%). Other topics which a high percentage of moms pay attention to online include childhood development tips (83%), children’s product reviews (73%) and parenting advice (73%).

46% of Moms Often Tell Friends

lucid-moms-tell-a-friend-apr-2011.jpgThe survey of found that 46% of moms often tell a friend about a business or website if asked, with another 52% sometimes telling a friend and only 2% never doing so.

In addition, 71% of respondents said they were more likely to tell a friend about a business or a website if they received an
incentive, such as a prize or a financial reward.

Other Findings

  • 84% of moms surveyed say the internet has made them more informed about children’s health issues.
  • 82% would go online for a second opinion.
  • 71% of Generation Y moms say they have a network of online friends that improves the quality of their lives, compared with 64% of Generation X moms.

Pew: 8 in 10 Web Users Look Online for Health Data

Eight in 10 US internet users look online for health information, making it the third most popular online pursuit among all those tracked by the Pew Internet Project, following email (94%) and using a search engine (87%), according to a February 2011 study from the Pew Internet Project. Since one-quarter of adults do not go online, the percentage of online health information seekers is 59% among the total US adult population.

About the Data: Survey data was collected in January 2011 from 514 mothers who are members of the online community HeardItFromAMom.com and say they “often” share health information.
