Top Viral Videos – April 2011

April 29, 2011

unruly-top-10-viral-videos-apr2011-may11.gifA salute to royalty was infused into the normal mix of cute kids, sports and humor that dominated the list of 10 most-shared online videos compiled by Unruly Media for April 2011. There was also a notable British Commonwealth air to this month’s selections, which included video tributes to the Prince William-Kate Middleton wedding and the athletic skills of UK-born soccer star David Beckham, as well as a promotional clip for Air New Zealand.

Everyone Loves a Wedding

Today’s broadcast of the royal wedding was seen by an estimated 2 billion people around the globe. While not as many people have viewed a humorous salute to the royal wedding created by T-Mobile, it still garnered enough viewers to earn top ranking for April on the Unruly most-shared list. The video features rap music, royal lookalikes and behavior that might be seen at some weddings but certainly not ones involving the British crown.

Sports and More Sports

Sports, at least when practiced by professionals, are visually exciting by nature, so it is not surprising that sports-related videos typically take several spots on the Unruly list each month. In April, the second-most-shared clip was a Diet Pepsi video of David Beckham performing a seemingly impossible stunt involving kicking three soccer balls an immense distance into three trash cans.

Other videos involving athletic feats include a clip from the Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX performing a synchronized dance celebrating Easter and a video showing people performing impressive “freerunning” feats at the Tempest Freerunning Academy.

In addition, soccer pops up again in the number seven video, a Spanish-language adidas promotion featuring a magical soccer ball that literally gets kicked all over the globe.

Darth Vader Clip Inspires Parody

In an interesting twist, one of this month’s most-shared videos appears to be a parody of another. Both involve cute kids, making them almost guaranteed winners from the start. A Volkswagen ad originally aired during the February 2011 Super Bowl broadcast, featuring a little boy dressed as “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader and combining humor with feel-good cutesiness and pop culture, is ranked number four in April after holding the number one spot for the previous two months.

However, the number three video is a new entry from Marvel Comics that initially follows a similar theme of a small boy dressed like the Norse god Thor (who is also a Marvel superhero), but then takes a decisively different ending involving the boy and his dad’s car. The video promotes the upcoming “Thor” film.

Make ‘Em Laugh

This month also features two humorous clips that made the March 2011 list, as well. One, an ad for Skittles candy, invites the viewer to place their finger on the screen to be licked by a cat (with a twist ending). The other is a promotional video for Air New Zealand featuring an appearance by pop culture icon and fitness guru Richard Simmons.
