Mobile Social Networking Grows

comscore-mobile-content-apr-11-june-2011.JPGThe frequency of mobile social networking grew about 10% between the three-month period ended January 2011 and the three-month period ended April 2011, according to comScore MobiLens data. Twenty-eight percent of US mobile subscribers accessed a social networking site via mobile phone in April, compared to 25.3% in January.

Mobile Games Also Grow about 10%

Playing games comprised 26.2% of the mobile audience in April, also up roughly 10% from 23.7% in January. In addition, 68.8% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, similar to 68.1% who did so in January. Browsers were used by 39.1% of subscribers (up 6% from 37%), while downloaded applications were used by 37.8% (up 7% from 35.4%). Listening to music represented 18% of subscribers, up 9%.

Apple Increases Platform Use 18%

comscore-mobile-oems-apr-11-june-2011.JPGFor the three-month average period ending in April, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices. In the only significant change in the top five mobile OEMs, Apple jumped to the number position with 8.3% share of mobile subscribers (up 18.5% from 7%), while RIM slipped to number five with 8.2% share (down 5% from 8.6%).

Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 24.5% of US mobile subscribers, followed by LG with 20.9% share and Motorola with 15.6% share.

Google Android Top Smartphone Platform

comscore-smartphone-platforms-apr-11-june-2011.JPGDuring the three months ending in April 2011, 74.6 million people in the US owned smartphones, up 13% from the three-month period ending in January 2011. Google Android ranked as the top operating system with 36.4% of U.S. smartphone subscribers, up 17% from 31.2%.
Apple also gained share, capturing the #2 position with 26% of the smartphone market, up 5% from 24.7%. RIM fell to third with 25.7% share down 15% from 30.4%; followed by Microsoft (6.7%) and Palm (2.6%).

Music Listening Most Increased Activity in March

In March 2011, comScore MobiLens data shows that 68.6% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, roughly flat with 68% in December and making it the most common mobile activity. While listening to music was the least commonly performed activity of the six tracked by comScore, performed by 17.9% of subscribers, it had the highest growth rate, rising about 14% from 15.7% participation in December.

In addition, browsers were used by 38.6% of subscribers (up 6%), while downloaded applications were used by 37.3% (up 8%). Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 10.5%, representing 27.3% of mobile subscribers, and playing games comprised 25.7% of the mobile audience, up 10%.
