Yahoo Makes MOM Gains in Search Queries

comscore-explicit-core-search-query-jul-11-aug-2011.JPGYahoo posted the highest rates of month-over-month (MOM) growth in both explicit and total core search queries among the three major US online search providers in July 2011, according to comScore qSearch data. It still remained well behind established search leader Google in both types of query.

Americans conducted more than 17.1 billion explicit core searches in July, up 3% from 16.7 billion the prior month. Google sites ranked first with 11.2 billion searches (up 2% from 10.9 billion), followed by Yahoo sites with 2.8 billion (up a leading 4% from 2.6 billion) and Microsoft sites with 2.5 billion (up 3% from 2.4 billion).

Looking at the much smaller search engines which place number four and five in the US search rankings, Ask Network delivered 494 million searches (up 3% from 478 million), followed by AOL, Inc. with 251 million (up 5% from 239 million).

Yahoo Total Core Search Queries Grow 5%

Google sites ranked first with 12.5 billion searches (up 3% from 12 billion), followed by Yahoo sites with 3.4 billion (up 5% from 3.3 billion) and Microsoft sites with 2.6 billion (down 3% from 2.65 billion).

Again, looking at the much smaller search engines which place number four and five in the US search rankings, Ask Network delivered 494 million searches (up 3% from 478 million), followed by AOL, Inc. with 251 million (up 5% from 239 million).

Search Shares Change Little

Google sites led the US explicit core search market in July with 65.1% market share, followed by Yahoo sites with 16.1% (up 0.2 percentage points) and Microsoft Sites with 14.4%. Ask Network accounted for 2.9% of explicit core searches, followed by AOL, Inc. with 1.5 (up 0.1 percentage points).

In terms of total core search share, Google sites accounted for 64.8% of total core search queries conducted (up 0.3 percentage points), followed by Yahoo sites with 17.9% (up 0.4 percentage points) and Microsoft Sites with 13.4% (down 0.7 percentage points). Ask Network comprised 2.6% of total search queries, followed by AOL, Inc. with 1.3%.

Organic Search Results Remain Nearly Flat

In July, 67.2% of searches carried organic search results from Google (compared to 67.6% in June), while 26.8% of searches were powered by Bing (compared to 26.6% in June).

Core Search Queries Reverse June Trend

Core search queries conducted by US web users on Yahoo dropped 13%, from almost 3.79 billion in May 2011 to about 3.28 billion in June 2011, according to previously released comScore qSearch data. Total core search queries declined 2%, from 17 billion to 16.7 billion.
In addition, four of the top five search providers saw the total number of explicit core search queries conducted decline, as well. Google lost 2%, going from 11.15 billion to 10.95 billion, while Yahoo also lost 2%, going from 2.71 billion to 2.65 billion.

Fourth place Ask Network and fifth place AOL, Inc. saw their relatively small totals drop 5% and 6%, respectively, while Microsoft remained essentially flat at about 2.4 billion. There were no significant changes in core search share, with Google maintaining the lead with a flat 65.5% share.

Core Search Query Trends Similar to July ’10

comScore data released in August 2010 shows that Americans conducted more than 16.6 billion total core search queries in July 2010 (up 1%) with Google sites leading with 10.3 billion searches, followed by Yahoo sites with 3.4 billion (up 8%) and Microsoft Sites with 2.1 billion (up 1%).

Google sites accounted for 61.6% of total core search queries conducted, followed by Yahoo sites with 20.1% and Microsoft sites with 12.6%. Ask Network captured 3.5% of total search queries, followed by AOL LLC with 2.2%.
