Smartphones are being used more commonly as music-listening devices, details The NPD Group in new survey results. 56% of smartphone owners say they use their device for music-listening, and 65% of those report using internet radio, meaning that overall, more than 1 in 3 smartphone owners are using internet radio on their devices.
30% of smartphone “music users” also report using on-demand services such as Spotify or Rhapsody, per the study results, with 60% also porting over their own music. Overall, 39% are listening to music at least daily, and 54% are using their device more for music than a year ago.
A recent study from GfK found that 6% of smartphone internet time is devoted to audio activities, and comScore has also tracked a rising segment of the mobile population using their devices for music-listening.
Meanwhile, while tablet owners aren’t as enthusiastic as smartphone owners about listening to music, 40% still do so on their device, according to The NPD Group data. That’s actually a smaller proportion than what Nielsen has found in the past.
About the Data: To obtain its data, an online survey was fielded to more than 2,300 consumers who are part of NPD’s online consumer panel. The results were balanced to represent U.S. adult demographics.
