Notes: North American box office revenues exceeded $11 billion on December 29, 2015, making 2015 the first year for that threshold to be reached, per Rentrak. With a projected $11.1 billion in revenues for the year, 2015’s box office total would represent a 7.2% increase from 2014 and about a 1.7% increase from the previous high of $10.9 billion set in 2013. There were several records set throughout the year, per Rentrak’s figures.
Those include:
- Largest January weekend gross, for “American Sniper;”
- Biggest February opening weekend, for “Fifty Shades of Grey;”
- Top April opening weekend, for “Furious 7;”
- Best June opening weekend, for “Jurassic World;”
- Largest September debut, for “Hotel Transylvania 2;” and
- The all-time biggest opening weekend, for December’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Separately, Rentrak reports that 2015 is set to be the highest-earning year on record globally, with more than $38 billion in revenues. The largest-grossing movie worldwide through December 31, 2015 was “Jurassic World,” with almost $1.7 billion in box office revenues. Four other movies grossed more than $1 billion worldwide for the year: “Furious 7;” “Avengers: Age Of Ultron;” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens;” and “Minions.”
