Estimates: How Netflix is Allocating its Original Programming Spending by Genre

Original content is becoming far more important to Netflix, as one-third of subscribers now say they watch this type of programming the most often on the platform. With the company reportedly planning to spend $6 billion on original content this year, Ampere Analysis has provided some insights into how that money is being spent across genres.

Ampere estimated how Netflix’s original content spending has been allocated to-date, concluding that Dramas have obtained the largest share (36%), followed by Comedies (22%).

(These genres tend to top the list of favorite Netflix originals, at least according to cord-cutters and cord-nevers.)

Beyond those top 2 genres, Action & Adventure programming also gets a sizable piece of the pie (14%). Ampere notes that the small shares devoted to Documentary & Biography (2%) and Children & Family (1%) might be in part due to lower production costs for those genres.

In other results from its analysis, Ampere reveals that – using a proprietary ratings assessment – the average quality of Netflix originals has decreased over the past couple of years, though it has stabilized in the past 6-odd months.
