Top 25 iPhone Apps Dominated by Games, SocNets

Nearly half of the top 25 most heavily penetrated Apple iPhone applications are games, with Tapulous’s Tap Tap Revenge scoring the #1 spot on the list and FlipSide5’s Touch Hockey FS5 coming in at #3 in February 2009 rankings, according to data from comScore’s new Apple App Store report.

The 12 games on the list include both classics such as Hangman and Pac-man, as well as more non-conventional titles such as Cube Runner and Crazy Penguin Catapult, comScore said.

Stylem Media’s “Backgrounds” application, at #2 on the list, had the highest installed base among non-game applications, followed closely by top social networking applications Facebook and MySpace Mobile.

Among the top 25, four apps were in the entertainment category, three were social-networking related and two were in the music category.

Tap Tap Revenge, which comScore said has been downloaded by one out of every three iPhone app users (32% ) by February 2009, has the largest installed base among applications downloaded from the Apple App store.

“Tap Tap’s success demonstrates that there is ample opportunity in the app space for any publisher to obtain significant distribution with a product that engages users,” said Brian Jurutka, VP, comScore. “Since the number of app users is growing nearly 10% each month, that opportunity will only continue to grow for both existing and emerging app developers.”

App Users Are Highly Engaged, Upper-Income Media Consumers

comScore also analyzed the demographic and online behavioral profile of Apple app users to determine their overall attractiveness to advertisers as an audience. The results indicate that app users have higher-than-average incomes and are heavily engaged with online media content.

The online site categories with which app users spent the greatest amount of time relative to the average internet users (as measured by their engagement index*) revealed above average engagement with retail, conversational media (social networking and blogs), entertainment, sports and search sites:

Other findings about Apple app users:

  • They are 32% more likely than average to belong to households earning at least $100K per year. This income segment represented 35% of all app users.
  • More than half (54%) of app users are in households making at least $75K per year.
  • They are at least three times more likely than the average internet user to visit several popular gaming sites, including Ultimate-guitar.com, IGN Entertainment, GameStop, AddictingGames, Xbox.com, Blizzard Entertainment, SourceForge and EA.com.
  • They are at least three times more likely than average to visit several popular social/communication/entertainment sites, including: AOL Instant Messenger, Hulu, Twitter.com, Digg.com, iMeem and MTV.com.

About the report: The? report, which observes the cumulative installed base of applications downloaded via iTunes, also provides information about the audience size of Apple iPhone app users and? demographic profiles and online behaviors.
