Arieso-Device-Breakdown-Hungriest-Mobile-Data-Users-Jan2013Smartphone users eat up more data than tablet users, a finding that can be attributed to increasing consumption on smartphones and frequent use of tablets in WiFi areas rather than on cellular networks, according to a new report from Arieso. The study also finds that the “hungriest” 1% of subscribers used 40% of the downlink volume in the European market analyzed. That’s down from 50% last year, perhaps due to market variation. Among this year’s extreme users, 40% use a smartphone, compared to just 6% using a tablet.

The remaining 54% use USB dongles or 3G modems.

Other interesting results from the study include:

  • iPhone 5 users consuming more data than any other smartphone users, and more than 4 times the volume of iPhone 3G users;
  • User-generated content growing by 17% year-over-year, though still only accounting for one-sixth of all data consumed; and
  • The heaviest 0.1% of data users consuming close to one-fifth of downlink data.

About the Data: The Arieso study addresses the recent data demands of over one million distinct subscribers over a single, 24-hour weekday in a Tier-1 UMTS European market1 with a mixture of urban and suburban morphologies. The comparative analysis focuses on popular devices which were represented by at least 1000 subscribers (and the most popular devices were represented by well over 10,000 subscribers).
