Travel, Retail Sites Saw an Uptick in Online Traffic in June

Hotels and resorts sites climbed to 37.4 million visitors during the month (up 8%), while travel transactions sites attracted 4.1 million visitors, and car rental sites 7.4 million, both up 5%. ranked as the category leader among ground and cruise sites with 14 million visitors, a 9% month-over-month increase. FirstGroup plc trailed distantly in the second spot with 2 million visitors (up 22%), followed by Carnival Cruise Lines with nearly 2 million visitors (up 6%), Vacations to sites with 1.2 million visitors (up 28%), Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. with 1.2 million (up 7%), and Stagecoachbus Group with 1 million (up 30%).

Within the hotel and resorts category, Hilton Hotels led with more than 37 million visitors, up 8%. Marriott ranked second with 5.4 million visitors, followed by Expedia Hotels with 5.2 million (up 22%), Intercontinental Hotels Group with 4.7 million (up 19%), Disney Parks & Travel with 4.2 million (up 9%), and Starwood Hotels and Resorts, with 3.3 million (up 30%).

Retail Sites Also Fare Well

Retail sites also saw an increase in traffic in June, accounting for 3 of the top 10 fastest-gaining categories by percentage change. Sports/outdoor, toys, and tickets each saw 5% increases, to 35 million, 16.1 million, and 27.7 million visitors, respectively.

Within the sports and outdoor retail site category, eBay Sports US took the top ranking with 1.1 million visitors, followed by with 3.2 million (up 25%) and Cabelas Inc. with 2.9 million (up 10%). Toysrus Sites topped the toy site category with 5.6 million visitors (up 2%), ahead of the LEGO Group, with 3.6 million visitors (up 26%) and Disney Shopping with 1.2 million (up 5%). Among the retail ticket sites, Ticketmaster took top billing with 14.4 million visitors, while held the second spot with 4.5 million (up 6%) and came in third with 3.2 million (up 20%).

Microsoft Closes Gap With Yahoo; Zynga Grows Fastest

Google Sites ranked as the #1 property in June with slightly more than 189.3 million visitors, virtually unchanged from a month earlier. Microsoft grew its number of visitors by more than 2 million to slightly more than 166 million, closing the gap with Yahoo, which stayed relatively stagnant at 167.2 million. In May, Yahoo had overtaken Microsoft for the second spot, and the gap was roughly 3.7 million visitors. Rounding out the top 5 in June were Facebook (158.9 million) and AOL (114 million), maintaining their rankings from May.

Meanwhile, Zynga was the fastest gaining property by percentage change in unique visitors, growing 103% to 14.9 million visitors in June. The top 10 brand movers in June according to Compete can be found here.

Display Ad Ecosystem Shifts

The ad ecosystem classifications changed in June, as comScore continues to expand the scope of its existing Advertising Networks category. Among syndicated Ad Focus entities, Google led with a reach of 82.4% Americans online. ShareThis (78.9%), Yahoo! Sites (75.6%), (72.3%) and (58.1%) rounded out the top 5.

Among advertising networks and buy side networks, Google Ad Network took the top ranking with a 93% reach, up from 92.2% the previous month. AOL Advertising (84.6%), AT&T AdWorks (82.2%), Yahoo! Network Plus (80.7%), and ValueClick Networks (80%) followed.

Among DSPs, SSPs, and ad exchanges – a category which comScore plans to expand in coming months – Rubicon Project REVV Platform reached 88.3% of Americans online.
