comScore-Top-10-US-Web-Properties-May2013-v-May2012-Jun2013The top 10 web properties in May 2013 featured the usual suspects (Google Sites, Yahoo! Sites, Microsoft, etc.), per the latest figures from comScore, but the list shows Yahoo! Sites having almost caught up to Google! Sites as the top property in the US. For the month, Google attracted 193.5 million unique visitors, with Yahoo close behind at almost 192.8 million, a gap of less than 700,000. A year earlier, in May 2012, Google boasted about 21.5 million more unique visitors than Yahoo (188.9 vs. 167.4 million).

Behind those frontrunners last month were Microsoft Sites (175.1 million) and Facebook (144.6 million), with AOL rounding out the top 5 at 118.7 million. A comparison of the top 50 in May 2013 compared to May 2012 shows some properties making a move up the rankings:

  • About, up from #49 to #16;
  • Tumblr, up from #46 to #29;
  • Pinterest, in at #41 after not appearing in the top 50;

Interestingly, Twitter moved down from the 25th spot last year to the 28th this year. Also it’s worth noting that with its acquisition of Tumblr, Yahoo may move ahead of Google in this month’s rankings.

Other Findings:

  • Retail occupied 2 of the 10 fastest-growing site categories (flowers/gifts/greetings, up 41%; and food, up 13%), as did gambling (lotto/sweepstakes, up 20%; and online gambling, up 14%) and travel (car rental, up 18%; and transactions, up 7%).
  • ShareThis kept its top position among Ad Focus entities in May, reaching 93.7% of Americans online, trailed by Yahoo! Sites (86.2%), Outbrain (84.4%) and Google (82.7%).
  • Among ad networks and buy-side networks, Google Ad Network was first again with 93% reach.
  • Among DSPs, SSPs and ad exchanges, Rubicon Project REVV Platform took the top ranking, reaching 96.8% of Americans online.
