NRF-Americans-July-4th-Plans-July2013About 9 in 10 American adults will celebrate July 4th this year, a figure that appears to inch up with every passing year, according to survey results from the NRF and BIGinsight. The most popular celebratory activity among adults this year will be attending a cookout, barbecue or picnic (68.6%), with the estimated 164.7 million partaking in this activity a record amount, per the NRF. Almost half of the adults surveyed also plan to attend a community fireworks celebration, while close to 1 in 8 say they’ll travel.

The percentage of Americans who plan to attend a parade has been steadily on the rise over the past few years, reaching 16% this year from 11.5% back in 2009.

It seems as though respondents are stocked up when it comes to patriotic merchandise: 65.7% said they own an American flag (up from 60.4% in 2009), and 48% own patriotic apparel. Decorations (34.9%), music (25%), and bumper stickers or car decals (13%) are among the other patriotic items that will presumably be on show during celebrations this year.

Given that more than 8 in 10 respondents own patriotic merchandise, few said they would purchase additional items in the lead-up to celebrations. This year, 25.6% said they would buy more items, although that’s a significant rise from 14.1% in 2009.

Finally, the price of gas looks to have slightly less of an impact this year on spending for the holiday: 35.4% said it would impact their spending, down from 46.5% a couple of years ago.

About the Data: The data is based on a survey of 5,706 adults conducted from May 1-8, 2013.
