Despite declines in overall visitors to MySpace as a social networking destination, unique visitors to MySpace’s music subdomain have grown 190% since its launch in September 2008 and year-over-year traffic to the URL has increased 1017%, according to (pdf) data from The Nielsen Company.

Since the destination’s inception last fall, the number of visitors to the ad-supported MySpace Music has grown from from 4.2 million uniques to 12.1 million in June 2009.

The increase, Nielsen said, is helping to cement MySpace’s presence in the online music space and further its quest to become a popular entertainment portal.

When comparing unique visitors of the music.myspace.com subdomain with other sites within the music category in June, Nielsen ranks it at #3 in terms of unique visitors, behind AOL Music and Yahoo Music, but ahead of popular music sites such as MTV Networks Music and Pandora.com.

Nielsen data from June also revealed that people between ages 12 and 17 are 2.4 times more likely than the average active internet user to visit music.myspace.com. Visitors ages 18-24 are 2.2 times more likely than the average internet user to visit the site.
