Top SocNets 53% Women; Bebo Most Female

The average male-to-female ratio of users on 19 of the top US? social networks is 47% male and 53% female, according to a recent analysis by Pingdom, which found that Bebo – with 66% of women users – is the most female-dominated of these sites.

In terms of its female domination, Bebo is closely followed by MySpace and Classmates.com (both 64% female).

Additional findings:

  • 84% (16 of 19) of the sites have more female than male users.
  • Social news sites Digg, Reddit and Slashdot all have significantly more male users than female.? Slashdot has the largest percenage of male users (82%).
  • Excluding social news sites, all of the sites in the study would have had more females than males.
  • Twitter and Facebook have almost the same male-female ratio; Twitter with 59% female users and Facebook with 57%.

About the analysis: The analysis was conducted in November 2009 using site demographics data for the US gathered from Google’s Ad Planner service. Pingdom’s analysis included 19 of the top social networks.? These are: Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter, Slashdot, Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, FriendFeed, Last.fm, Friendster, LiveJournal, Hi5, Imeem, Ning, Xanga, Classmates.com, Bebo.
