NPD-Most-Popular-Apps-Used-Connected-TVs-May2013Netflix is by far the most popular application used on connected TVs, according to new figures from The NPD Group. 40% of connected TVs (either through the TV or through another device) are streaming content from Netflix, compared to just 17% used to watch video on YouTube, and 11% to watch Hulu or Hulu Plus. The research also indicates that among home entertainment devices, internet capable TVs are least likely to be connected and used for online features.

Overall, 47% of home entertainment devices (internet-capable TVs, Blu-ray Disc Players, video game consoles, and streaming media devices) are connected and used for those capabilities. Rankings them by use of online capabilities, the researchers show that streaming media players are most likely to be connected and used, followed by video game consoles, Blu-ray Disc Players, and connected TVs.

Last year, The NPD Group released data revealing that TVs are more popular than PCs for watching online video (newer data from the IAB puts laptops ahead of internet-connected TVs among monthly+ online video viewers).

That study also showed Netflix to be the most popular application for web-to-TV video, used by 40% of respondents watching online video on the TV. Among those respondents, 12% reported accessing Hulu Plus and 4% connected to Vudu.

About the Data: The most recent NPD Group data comes from a survey of more than 4,000 US consumers aged 18 and older in Q1 2013. The earlier data is from a quarterly survey of 1,200 US broadband households (data weighted to represent US population aged 13 and older) and a semi-annual survey including about 10,000 respondents.
