Experian-Top-10-Mobile-Sites-Week-ending-Feb-23-2013Experian Hitwise, along with its launch of Hitwise Mobile, has released a list of the most visited mobile websites from the week ending February 23, 2013. Beyond the completely unsurprising finding that Google ranks as the top site, with 17.3% market share of visits, it’s interesting to see that Twitter cracked the top 10, in at #8 with 0.6% share of visits. That’s notable because in comScore’s recent rankings of the top 50 web properties for January, Twitter only came in at #26. What’s more, the Hitwise rankings break out various Google properties, which account for 5 of the top 10 sites overall, whereas the comScore data aggregates all Google properties into one “Google Sites” category. Were Hitwise to do the same, Twitter would be ranked 6th on the list of top 10 mobile sites. (Some recent details on mobile Twitter users can be found here.)

Of course, it’s worth noting that the Hitwise data only covers one week of mobile activity, so the results may not hold up over a longer time period (although presumably Google would retain its top position). Still, the sampled time period doesn’t cover the Academy Awards, which were aired on February 24, and which would have been a big factor in Twitter’s ranking.

Meanwhile, another interesting finding from the Hitwise data is that the top mobile sites still see far greater engagement on desktops than on mobiles. For example, Gmail’s desktop visitors spent almost twice as long as its mobile visitors. That’s despite Gmail sporting the highest engagement of the top 5 mobile sites.

About the Data: The Hitwise mobile data is based on a sample from 3G/4G and Wi-Fi sources including both smartphones and tablets providing data on mobile internet activity. For the initial release of Hitwise Mobile, Hitwise is providing Rankings data on visits to websites from mobile devices (including both smartphones and tablets). Rankings are reported weekly and are available for the visits share, page views and average visit time metrics across more than 170 categories for more than 4 million mobile sites globally.
